CLASSIC FUSION FUENTE LIMITED EDITION

Hublot pays tribute to the unmatched artisanal work of the cigar maker Arturo Fuente with a limited edition of the

emblematic Classic Fusion model.

“This new creation is a tribute to the workmanship, a celebration of human spirit, to the precision and finesse necessary to produce excellent cigars and watchmaking. In this aspect, we feel very close to the Fuente family.”

- Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot

It required passion, self-sacrifice and the desire to achieve perfection in order to push Fuente cigars to the pinnacle of world tobacco production. Since its creation in Cuba in 1912, the “Tabacalera Arturo Fuente y Compañia” business has survived many challenges along the way—a forced depar-ture from Cuba following the Castroists’ arrival in power, exile both in Florida and in Nicaragua—to eventually set up in the Dominican Republic. This is where its planters and rollers finally found a place that measured up to their immense talent. It was here, at the beginning of the eighties, that Carlito Fuente, worthy descendant of the founder, Arturo, chose to set up his cigar factory, despite everyone’s advice for him not to settle in the Dominican Republic. It was a gamble that paid off: one hundred and five years after its birth, the Fuente brand has found its rightful place, has competed with and surpassed the best Cuban cigar producers.

Enter the watchmaker Hublot. During the centenary of Arturo Fuente cigars in 2012, the two brands decided to become partners, brought together by their shared desire in their own field, to stretch the demonstration of excellence. This union has already produced several watch collections and differ-ent charitable initiatives to help the Dominican population through the Fuente Family Foundation. A new creation pays tribute to this common love of fine craftsmanship: the Hublot Classic Fusion Fuente Limited Edition watch. This new release will come in three models produced in limited edi-tions.

“My family and I are very moved by the design sported by this new Hublot-Fuente model. I consider it to be a tribute to our emotional connection to the land, to the earth that enable us to make our cigars and to our origins. Once again, it honours the shared values of the Fuente tab-acalera and the Hublot manufacture.”

- Carlito Fuente, CEO of Arturo Fuente

Using the famous Classic Fusion 45-mm diameter case, the first of the models comes in King Gold, a unique alloy developed by the Hublot house and combining gold and titanium. Made from this precious material, the case, bezel and crown are finely engraved, paying tribute to the Fuente house. The case presents a drawing of tobacco leaves whereas the bezel reproduces a motif reminiscent of the earthenware tiles adorning the floors of the old colonial houses of Havana and incorporating the letter X, emblem of the Fuente family. The back of the watch is engraved with an illustration evoking Güines, the town in the province of Havana where the history of the Fuente family took root. It is also marked with “Château de la Fuente” and the model’s limited edition series number. Dis-playing gold plated appliques, its dial comes in burgundy colour, a tonality also used on its deployant buckle clasp strap in rubber-lined alligator skin. Fifty pieces of this version will be produced.

The second variation has sublime livery in brushed titanium. It features the same fine chasings as the King Gold model and a blue tint for its dial and strap. 100 numbered pieces will be produced.

The third version uses bronze, a fine alloy whose reflections evolve over time, beautifully matching the tone of green chosen for its strap and its dial. 100 pieces of this final version will also be made.

All three editions will be fitted with the HUB1112 calibre, an automatic movement operating at a frequency of 28'800 A/h and with a 42-hour power reserve.

Who's who

“I’d known Jean-Claude for 20 years. When he took over Hublot, I offered to open a dedicated store in Paris. He came to see the premises. We talked together for barely 45 minutes before reaching an agreement.” The relationship between Chronopassion and Hublot is built on mutual trust, spontaneity – and firm convictions about the projects with the greatest potential. As Lauren Adams would say, “there’s no point discussing what’s already been agreed.” It’s the perfect adage when it comes to the personalities of former Hublot CEO Hublot Jean-Claude Biver and Laurent Picciotto, the founder of Chronopassion. Rather than simply being the story of a brand and its products, Hublot and Chronopassion is above all a story with a strongly personal touch. When Carlo Crocco created the Hublot watch with a gold case and a rubber strap in 1980, it was the first time in the history of watchmaking that a precious material, gold, had been used alongside rubber. In the mid-1990s, rubber became prized by many leading watchmaking brands, demonstrating that Hublot’s decision had been the right one. For the brand, rubber was anything but a fad – rather, it embodied its philosophy and became its hallmark. Having headed up Hublot for fifteen years, Carlo Crocco became increasingly busy with work for his MDM Foundation, so he set out to find the right person to take the helm of the watchmaking firm. That was when he met Jean-Claude Biver, who had just left Blancpain. Biver put Hublot back on the road to recovery, becoming head of the company from May 2004 through to 2012. “Our paths crossed in 2006,” recalls Laurent Picciotto. “Jean-Claude had already brought the brand right up to date, with lines like Big Bang, Classic Fusion and King Power. This was the beginning of the rebirth of Hublot. He drew plans, diagrams, rebuses and roadmaps for me. When he stepped down from his position as CEO in 2012, I realised that he had had his entire roadmap in mind right from the word go. Not only that, but that he had completed it – ahead of time.” The takeover of BNB Concept proved to be a key turning-point for the brand. The company had been subcontracting for Hublot since 2004, dealing with complication watches, particularly tourbillons. At a time when BNB was struggling financially, Hublot offered to buy out the firm. The brand thereby became a “manufacture”, enabling it to supply haute horlogerie models, notably a large number of tourbillons and Minute Repeaters, as well as more atypical pieces such as the Key of Time. Together, Laurent Picciotto and Jean-Claude Biver forged a partnership rather than a commercial relationship. The two men created a number of custom series and set about laying the foundations of what was to become Hublotista, the community of Hublot owners. At the end of the day, they are still motivated by passion – and guided above all by instinct.
