Skull 48.8: A poignant reminder to make the most of life!

The Skull has been an iconic HYT timepiece since 2015. Its boldness pushes the boundaries for a brand that stands out from the crowd, starting with its fluid time display. Every feature of the Skull is designed to act as a "memento mori", a reminder that life is short and you must seize every moment. It is a symbol of life rather than of death. Just like the fluids which, driven by two flexible reservoirs, progress inside the capillary to mark the passage of time. Without liquid, no life is possible. There would be no timekeeping either: this process began with the first water clocks (or "clepsydras"), over three thousand years ago. As a 21st-century clepsydra, the HYT is a philosophical instrument. Even more so when it takes the form of a bold skull with hollow eyes.

A new model has now been added to the collection: The Skull 48.8. The case has been slimmed down from 51 mm to 48.8 mm, perfect for more slender wrists. The skull is patinated, a finish designed to enhance it as it ages. The patina grows with every passing second measured by the HYT device. More specifically, measured by the capillary, which hugs the outline of the skull – a feat of glass engineering.

A watch adorned with a skull. One might think this just another passing trend. But this would be to forget that the watchmakers who created the first portable timepieces, in the sixteenth century, at the height of the artistic genre of "memento mori", immediately recognised the significance of the symbol. Make the most of your time, friends, for life is short.

The case for the the Skull 48.8 is made from 5N pink gold. The hours are indicated on the outer bezel. The external dial boasts a magnificent grained effect thanks to its microblasted treatment. The strap is made from matte black alligator.

Who's who

Fluid Time
HYT was born of a question. Time flows and only gains meaning through content. So why limit its measurement to indicating the now in splendid isolation, with needle-sharp hands or fleeting digital displays?  Determined that its rebellion should make statements and waves, a multi-disciplinary think-tank set out to create timepieces that visibly connect the past, present and future. The HYT answer is a watch that overcomes the force of gravity to indicate the passage of time with liquids. Highly advanced technology took its cue from philosophy to mirror time’s intrinsic fluidity.
The rest is history. To be precise, it’s history that began 3,400 years ago with the Clepsydras, or water clocks, of the Pharaohs. These so-called “water thieves” transported H2O from one container to another to measure elapsed or “stolen” time. This meaningful visualization of the transition of time seemingly disappeared until 2012, when HYT broke new scientific ground, inventing a wristwatch integrating a patented fluidic module. A colored liquid documents the recent past; a transparent fluid indicates the foreseeable future. Their meeting point is a meniscus, aka the now.
Today HYT is an ecosystem that unites science, hi-technology, philosophy, art and design. Based in Neuchâtel, at the heart of the traditional Swiss watchmaking region, a dedicated team of 43 individuals makes liquid time real time. Their radical wristwatches harmoniously incorporate a mechanical watch movement as the trigger to the fluid propulsion. They make total sense of time – time and time again.
