Bell & Ross BR-X1

Bell and Ross Watches BR-X1 Collection of Stunning Skeleton Chronograph Watches

Bell and Ross watches, founded by Bruno Belamich and Carlos Rosillo in only 1992 have only ever specialised in the production of functional, durable watches, celebrating the hand wound watch as tool, and designing the chronograph watch case, strap, movement and sapphire crystal with this in mind, typically in the form the ‘circle within a square’ layout of the clock face of aviation instruments, white hands on a black dial, with the aim of defying the most demanding of environments and pressure, from the requirements of a bomb disposal expert to the needs of astronauts venturing into space. Everything from watch case, sapphire crystal, woven rubber or canvas strap to the Haute Horlogerie inspired movement, some complete with tourbillon complication, are produced in materials specifically with this aim in mind, from titanium to carbon fibre

The introduction of the Bell and Ross BR-X1 Collection by Bell and Ross Watches in 2014 signalled the launch of a series of limited edition ‘Experimental’ watches, including open-worked chronograph delights in a diverse range of case materials that includes forged carbon fiber, titanium,  ceramic and sapphire crystal, with super thin chronograph skeleton movement in designs offering very strong rubber strap style pilot, diver and field watch motifs, but with fine Haute Horlogerie finishing. The Bell X-1 itself was of course, the first experimental rocket-propelled plane to break the sound barrier back in 1947, a symbol of immense technical innovation combined with outstanding military test pilot bravery, an obvious choice for the brand to describe its series of experimental series of watches, and one which would see them take their place among that long list of names described above including Renault, Richard Mille, Hermes, Richemont, Chanel and Mr Porter  across the world, and particularly in London and Basel in Europe, and the United States and Australia.

Today, the BR-X1 Collection from Bell & Ross Watches includes the Bell and Ross BR-X1 Titanium, the Bell and Ross BR-X1 Black Titanium, the Bell and Ross BR-X1 Red Boutique Edition and the Bell and Ross BR-X1 Carbon Forge models of limited edition skeleton movement chronograph watch.

The Bell & Ross Watches BR-X1 Titanium (in a limited edition of only 250 pieces) utilizes the manufacture’s BR-CAL.313 Calibre (or calibre to some) self-winding skeleton chronograph mechanical movement, based on the ETA 2892 movement but here with the addition of an openwork 30-minutes Dubois-Deprax chronograph movement module, housed in a 45mm diameter watch case combining titanium, ceramic and rubber inserts. The Bell & Ross Watches BR-X1 Titanium watch movement offers, skeleton date at 6 o’clock and hours, minutes, small and small seconds display to the dial face, and of course, the  60 seconds/30-minute chronograph itself, operated by rocker push buttons. The clock-like dial side face is covered with an anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal, while that to the titanium watch back is a small, tinted sapphire crystal exposing the balance. The indicators for date, hours, minutes, seconds and chronograph hands to the dial face side of The Bell & Ross Watches BR-X1 Titanium are very easily read, even through the sapphire crystal, and a SuperLumiNova coating to the hours, minutes, seconds and chronograph hands means this is also true after dark. Also visible through the watch case sapphire crystal front is the Bell & Ross signature ‘X’ shaped upper bridge to the movement, black DLC coated for good measure in some versions.

The Bell & Ross BR-X1 Red Boutique Edition, only available in a very limited number of pieces from Bell & Ross boutique, offers the same auto mechanical calibre movement type skeleton chronograph watch, the incredible water resistance down to 100m of other models within the BR-X1 collection, Titanium Ceramic case with bumper type protective rubber inserts tinted sapphire crystal window revealing the balance to the case back, but for this model, a woven black rubber strap is combined with a stunning red-tinted mineral glass crystal front. The Hours, minutes, small seconds and chronograph indicators are necessarily Superluminova filled, and point toward applique metal indices once again with Superluminova inserts.

The Bell & Ross Watches BR-X1 Carbone Forge model forgoes the titanium case material of other models in the Bell & Ross Watches BR-X1 collection, substituting  instead a case material that includes an incredibly sophisticated black carbon fibre material that is combined with Grade 5 titanium ceramic and the rubber inserts common to other models in the BR-X1 collection to other elements of the watch. In line with other models in the BR-X1 collection of limited edition skeleton chronograph watches from Bell & Ross, the BR-X1 Carbon  Forge features both the pilot watch theme and 100m water resistance , with the skeleton date and chronograph, hours, minutes and seconds hands indicators with tachymeter scale on the flange, ceramic rocker push buttons and crown with rubber inserts, and a black woven rubber strap with PVD steel pin buckle, once again with rubber inserts.

Final mention needs to be made of another exceptional skeleton chronograph from Bell & Ross, which similarly forms part of the Bell & Ross BR-X1 collection of luxury limited edition watches, the Bell & Ross BR-X1 Tourbillon. As is to be expected, this pitches Bell & Ross into fierce competition with some of the best watchmakers and manufactures from Switzerland and Europe (many of whom regularly display at the Basel World Expo), and brands including Chanel, Hermes, Richemont, Richard Mille and Mr Porter. While clearly a part of the BR-X1 collection, the BR-X1 Tourbillon from Bell & Ross takes the BR-X1 and propels the watch design and manufacture into the sphere of the very best in Haute Horlogerie. This addition to the Bell & Ross BR-X1 has been even further refined with the introduction of the BR-X1 Tourbillon Sapphire, where the case material, neither titanium nor carbon fibre, is sapphire crystal itself, offering a stunningly level of transparency for the Bell & Ross skeleton chronograph movement, reinforced further by the translucent rubber strap with satin polished steel pin, offering remarkable views of the one minute flying tourbillon and indeed, the Haute Horlogerie finishing to this remarkable watch calibre.
