In 2000, Corum presented the Bubble, an oversized watch with a sapphire crystal expanded. A radical design that immediately became a must in the third millennium. Fifteen years later exactly, Bubble makes a triumphant return, establishing himself as a pillar of the legacy watchmaker Corum.
It is a distinction watch and boldness in the image of Laurent Picciotto. Men of all the challenges, he brought to this new model all the impertinence that many conformists have struggled to accommodate.
Global benchmark of watchmaking is Laurent Picciotto who associates for the first time with Corum to revive and ennoble this iconic model to a new ranking of Haute Horlogerie.
At the turn of the 21st century, watchmaking was a far cry from what it is today. The oversized watches were not on the rise, not to mention watches to unconventional forms ... But things began to change in 2000 when Corum initiated a trend that would soon revolutionize the world of watchmaking.
At Baselworld in 2000, Corum unveils Bubble, with a single diameter of 44 mm and an imposing sapphire crystal with distorting effects. With its size and its completely new form, the Bubble was an instant success.
Its design was the fruit of the imagination of Severin Wunderman, entrepreneur and insatiable creator who had just buy Corum. Survivor of the concentration camps and cancer, the indefatigable Wunderman gave free rein to his imagination by drawing an experimental diving watch 1960 equipped with a huge curved glass to enable it to withstand the pressure Underwater. Thus was born the Bubble, one of the most iconic models of all time.
Unquestionably one of a kind, the Bubble and its unusual design, however, were only perpetuate the philosophy Corum. Since its founding in 1955, Corum excels in original timepiece design, from Rolls-Royce grille inspired the famous luxury car, to the Golden Bridge, characterized by its remarkable movement wand in elongated shape.
Despite his young age, already Bubble is a pillar of the heritage of the brand and claims a rightful place in the pantheon watchmaker. The Bubble reborn today as part of the collection Corum Heritage, alongside other legendary models such as the Coin Watch Slim.
If it retains the aesthetic codes of the original model, the Bubble vintage 2015 does not just copy it. Equipped with a spherical crown surrounded by rubber, the box is heavily loaded with soft and rounded lines, like the original model.
However, it has a larger diameter of 47 mm, displaying truly exceptional proportions, more so when one considers the thickness of 18.8 mm, sapphire crystal understood. As usual, the functionality was one of the key criteria for designers, who embellished the short curved horns case to perfectly fit the wrist.
With 8 mm thick sapphire crystal is one of the most robust ever created in watchmaking. Sapphire is an incredibly hard material. Its cutting requires a diamond tool. So it takes many hours would do to shape a flat sapphire crystal and ordinary. This allows to imagine the amount of work required to carve the glass of the Bubble. It all starts with taking a sapphire block. It is then shaped to form the shape of a bubble and then polished to display crystal-clear sound and a total absence of optical imperfections.
Given its large thickness, the sapphire crystal lens made office, magnifying and distorting the dial. Corum's designers took the opportunity to create a smart dial, decorated with a pattern under the Op Art or Optical Art. Inspired by the work of Victor Vasarely, the Hungarian-born French artist and father of Op Art, the dial is decorated with squares that become larger as they approach the center of the dial.
Op Art was to create static sequences to give the impression of movement or to produce surprising or conflicting perspectives. The dial of the Bubble is perfectly flat, made of a lacquered brass disc struck a cubic pattern. Still, you'd think the curved, rounded shape and apparent almost give him the dome of air.
This striking dial Op Art will be declined in two versions Bubble limited edition with PVD coating, from 350 copies each. The first is the Bubble Vintage, consisting of a bronze PVD case and decorated with Super-LumiNova for the vintage touch. Modern watch designed to look like an old model from a bygone era, Vintage Bubble is a nod to the original Bubble model, which celebrates 15 years this year.
In a completely different style, All Black Bubble, entirely covered with shiny black PVD, sports a matte black dial with hands and indexes your coal. The Bubble of All Black discards any frills and proclaims the omnipotence of monochrome to underscore the iconic shape of the Bubble.
Incorporated into our ongoing catalog, the third model of the collection Bubble totally gets rid of the dial. This gives way to a skeleton movement, sapphire crystal transfiguring the workings of the automatic movement CO0082.
All Bubble models are mounted on rubber lined leather bracelets for calfskin and alligator versions Op Art for the skeleton template. Each watch has a loop attached to the housing.
