Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri from Giuliano Mazzuoli Watches, Florence, Italy
The Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri Watch from Giuliano Mazzuoli Watches, Florence, Italy, is yet another exquisite creation from the mind of Giuliano Mazzuoli, the Florentine watch designer responsible for a small range of watch models, commencing with the now legendary stainless steel case Giuliano Mazzuoli ‘Manometro’, the marble case Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro ‘Carrara’ (and Mazzuoli Manometro Carrara Chronograph), the Giuliano Mazzuoli ‘Trasmissione Meccanica’, and even a small cased delight which is not a wrist watch at all, the Giuliano Mazzuoli ‘Manometrino Pocket Watch’.
What all of these watches have in common is that all of them have as their direct inspiration, an auto – mechanical object, with the facsimile in watch form being true to almost every detail of the original object which inspired its creation, and doing so in a manner which has won widespread international acclaim. The key to all this interest is of course, the very special character of Giuliano Mazzuoli watches in general, with the Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri from Giuliano Mazzuoli Watches, Florence, Italy, being a perfect example of this, and evidence of just how specialized watch design has recently become when compared the period when traditional exemplars such as TAG Heuer and Seiko held sway, especially in the chrono watch segment.
Working from his home town near Florence, in Tuscany, Italy,  Giuliano Mazzuoli first designed the Giuliano Mazzuoli ‘Manometer’, the watch design almost a perfect facsimile, in watch form, of a form of pressure gauge, the Manometer: this usually circular, clock shaped analogue gauge, with a single hand sweeping clockwise around a white dial against an indicator track displaying ever higher pressure, is an industrial design classic that we are all familiar with. The genius of the Mazzuoli Manometro was to apply this design directly to his watch. The Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro men’s automatic watch, particularly in its original stainless steel case form (with the white clock dial and black strap), rather than the later cement, carbon fiber and marble case models, was thus able to tap into a panoply of interesting design motifs – playfully deconstructing the minimalist industrial object with an inspired watch creation that both reflects the ‘time pressure’ of modern life and offers a cheerful balm for it. The success of the original stainless steel case Manometro version has been equaled by that of subsequent models with case material in carbon fiber (Manometro Carbon) and marble (as the Manometro Carrara), as well as the Manometro Chronograph.
The 2012 Baselworld unveiling of two new models signaled that the exquisite timepieces from Giuliano Mazzuoli would in future extend the range of the firm’s luxury watch auto-mechanical inspiration, in the form of the Giuliano Mazzuoli Trasmissione Meccanica and Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri. Here, Timepieces Giuliano Mazzuoli took inspiration from individual automobile components, gear forms and clutch drive plates providing the basis for the Mazzuoli Trasmissione Meccanica, while the ‘it’ with the Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri was to even more specific: not just any tachometer, but an Alfa Romeo Tachometer, the home of Mazzuoli himself also providing residence to an Alfa Romeo 8C. The exquisite timepiece that is the Giuliano Mazzuoli Watches, Tuscany, Italy, Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri would therefore be one of the timepieces closest to Giuliano Mazzuoli’s heart, homage to a specific instrument on the dashboard of his very own Alfa Romeo 8C. This watch, while offering the classic simplicity of a Moritz Grossman beauty, takes the contemporary watch in a completely contemporary design direction.
The Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri has no crown, and instead relies upon a two speed ‘trasmissione meccanica’ selector which unlatches from the watch case side, in conjunction with rotation of the large stainless steel bezel, to make contact with the internal gearing necessary to adjust the time and set the watch. It is always worth keeping a watch on any free shipping online watch seller site, as the Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri has also been made available from time to time in very limited editions featuring pink gold and titanium case options, but to pocket one of those pre owned from any seller the buyer would have to make contact very quickly.
The Giuliano Mazzuoli Contagiri from Giuliano Mazzuoli Watches of Tuscany is certainly different from Seiko or TAG Heuer. Nor though, is it, perhaps against some people’s expectations, a chronograph in the true sense of what a chrono watch is. In many respects, and particularly as an homage to an inspirational piece of auto mechanical design, it is in many ways, particularly in its aesthetic purity and function, closest related to the first Giuliano Mazzuoli - no surprise then, that the Giuliano Mazzuoli watch, the Manometro. It forgoes the chrono function, the exotic case materials of the Mazzuoli Cement, Mazzuoli Carrara Chronograph and the complex case and dial layout of the Mazzuoli Trasmissione Meccanica models, for real purity of line and purpose.
