Ressence Type 1 B

Ressence Type 1B

The Ressence Type 1B luxury watch from Ressence Watches, the brand founded from the sheer will and persistence of Antwerp native Belgian industrial designer Benoit Mintiens, was just the first in what has proven to be an exceptional collection of high design concept watches, combining a titanium case with Ressence Watch and Benoit Mintiens own mechanical movement module which power a unique hands-less time display of hours, minutes, seconds and day against the black dial, rendered with perfect clarity beneath a stunning domed sapphire crystal case front. Offered at a price that will surprise many, the hand-less, crown-less feature-filled Ressence Type 1B luxury watch from Ressence Watches is a stunning black beauty, that turns the conventional watchmaking of brands such as Omega and Bell & Ross on its head, while at the same time offering an intriguingly playful mechanical alternative to the printed circuitry of the Apple Watch.

The comparison of just what the Ressence Type 1B luxury watch from Ressence Watches has had to offer to compete with the ‘mainstream’ output of brands such as Omega and Bell & Ross on the one hand, and the Apple Watch from Apple on the other, is a feature-filled list of design innovations and new concept additions that will shock even the most wizened of Haute Horlogerie experts. The Ressence Type 1B watch from Ressence Watch is a high concept design watch, in terms of every detail from its titanium case material, stunningly innovative mechanical movement module powering the “Ressence Orbital Convex System” or “ROCS” and complex system of discs for displaying hours, minutes, seconds and days of the week, all the way through to the beautifully integrated minimalist case and sapphire crystal. What many will not even guess at when they first place the Ressence Type 1B watch from Ressence Watch on their wrist is the will and determination of brand founder Benoit Mintiens to genuinely push case and movement innovation and integration forward and the fact that the Ressence Type 1B in the inheritor of a string of patented three-dimensional watch complications, in the form of the Ressence Orbital Convex System as a mechanical movement module and time display mechanism, that took years to develop. The such an advanced mechanical movement module complication and display mechanism as the Ressence Orbital Convex System hides beneath the apparent simplicity of black dial and super-luminova filled ‘hands’ is not the only ‘subterfuge’ sitting in the grade 5 titanium case. The blackface dial, dark grey toned titanium case marvel that is the Ressence Type 1B is in fact a crown-less winding design, which in fact does not have any traditional hands at all, with all-time display information, including hours, minutes, seconds and days of the week (including weekends) shown on a single surface under the beautifully domed crystal sapphire case front, matched to a similar domed sapphire crystal case back to the rear of the watch. The indications and hours, minutes, seconds and day of the weekend/weekend on the watch are all super-luminova filled, glowing a pleasant green in the dark.

On the Ressence Type 1B luxury watch from Ressence Watches, as the watch has no traditional crown (only adding to the minimalist simplicity of the watch in plain view), winding and time setting of the Type 1B is achieved when the turning case back itself is itself wound or turned, and as such the case back fulfills the functions of a traditional crown. The crown-less design has the added benefit, not least for Ressence Watch, that the Ressence Type 1B black equally suits left- and right-handed wearers.

The grade 5 titanium case of the Ressence Type 1B luxury watch from Ressence Watches is host to a self-winding ETA 2824/2 movement, upon which Ressence Watch add their very own ‘display module’, which they term the Ressence Orbital Convex System. The orbital display provides hours and minutes by means of a system of rotating convex discs, in addition to days of the week and weekends indication, which is similarly powered. The mechanical ingenuity comes from the fact that the ETA movement provides only a seconds input to the Ressence Orbital Convex System and the intricate Ressence  mechanism, made up of some 27 gears and a total of 40 jewels, through a single mechanical connection, calculating from this input the hours, seconds and day for display on the rotating, planetary type convex discs that are used for displaying hours, minutes, seconds and day (two ‘unfilled’ indications within the day ‘subdial’ inform the wearer it is the weekend). The minimalist industrial black dial face time display, with large minutes, smaller hours ‘subdial’, and even smaller seconds and day of the week ‘subdials’ (none of which are really subdials but rather rotating discs), joyously rotate beneath a large, anti-reflective coated domed sapphire crystal case front. The integration of the Ressence Type 1 orbital convex system and its rotating convex discs for the display itself, combined with what have the appearance of traditional watch hands (but are really marking on orbital discs, rotating inside each other), set against Arabic numerals, gives the impression of a very natural object, with almost a complete absence of straight lines, flowing very smoothly between the form and function. With a power reserve of some 36 hours and its beautifully comfortable calfskin lined Black Barenia leather strap, the grade 5 titanium case Ressence Type 1B luxury watch from Ressence Watches remains eminently practical at the same time.

In a world of watches where classic diver, pilot, and chronographs are seemingly everywhere, even when they come from likes of Omega and newer titans such as Bell & Ross, there are some watch buyers who yearn for something a little different. Many will appreciate what Ressence is trying to achieve with the black dial titanium case Ressence 1B, uniting seemingly antagonistic ideas into a high concept design. This is minimalism, classic simplicity, stunning legibility, mechanical movement excellence and progressive, innovative watchmaking and a way of telling the time without traditional hands and without a traditional crown for winding, offered at an exceptional price whether purchasing new or pre-owned. Grab a slice of the black beauty that is the black dial grade 5 titanium case Ressence Type 1B luxury watch from Ressence Watches while you can, there’s far more to talk about than with an Apple Watch!
