God of Water - The 5th element of Daniel Strom

Strom Watches Strom Agonium Nethuns II

July is perhaps the perfect month for diver watches, to actually venture into the water beneath the waves and challenge Nethuns, or Neptune, God of the Seas, with your life. The Strom Agonium Nethuns II, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon, both watches from Daniel Strom, watchmaker, designer and philosopher and his Swiss Strom Watches brand, is perhaps the perfect diver’s watch to choose for the occasion. As examples of the contemporary diving watch, the Strom Agonium s II, and the diving tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon Diving watch, feature not only 200m (metres) of water resistance by virtue of a unique system of the case with inner and outer case shells, but a rich variety of materials, including solid silver, palladium and platinum, and an hour and minute hand forming a neat contrast of black and silver. While though, on the one hand, the palladium, platinum, solid silver and 200m (metres) water resistant inner and outer case of the Strom Agonium Nethuns II, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diving watches, offer the best in contemporary technical watchmaking,  on the other hand the real offering to Nethuns, or Neptune, God of the Seas, is the watch styling. This is Jules Verne’s retrofuturism at its best, and perhaps something watchmaker, designer, and philosopher are uniquely placed to pull off.

The Swiss watchmaker, designer and philosopher Daniel Strom, with his Switzerland based watchmaking brand Strom Watches and diving watch models such as the Strom Agonium Nethuns II diving watch, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diving watch, has carved out a unique niche in contemporary watch making, with an exceptional aesthetic, equally at home while diving into the water in July or a black tie, silver service dining event. Born into a family with a rich watchmaking tradition, his was to be a life where the inner journey was to produce, as watchmaker and designer, incredible pieces. And while the outer styling, part gothic, part retro-futurism, part haute horlogerie, all evident in his diver watches such as the Strom Agonium Nethuns II diving watch, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diving watch, the technical specification, clever use of inner and outer case elements and thoughtful use of black, silver, palladium, platinum, and solid silver is equally a match for anything from Jules Verne’s

The Strom Agonium Nethuns II diving watch, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diving watch from Daniel Strom Watches Switzerland both feature a unique combination of an outer case (where all the Jules-Verne’s-hand-styling appears), and an inner case, which houses mechanical, self-winding Swiss made movement, which is hermetically sealed and perfectly watertight. This sophisticated solution prevents the ingress of water, the inner and outer case combination yielding a total water resistance of some 200m while giving the Strom Nethuns models authentic diving watch credentials. Set into the outer case is a screw locked crown in the form of a very Jules-Verne’s-submarine bulkhead hatch wheel at 9 o’clock, which serves more than an aesthetic function and is in fact how the rotating inner diving bezel is operated. To adjust the rotating inner diving bezel, the bulkhead hatch wheel for the bezel is operated and then screw locked, a neat but sophisticated solution that prevents inadvertent handling of the crown and bezel. A traditional crown at 3 o’clock serves the normal function for hours, minute and second hand, balancing the screw locked crown at 9 o’clock and adjusts the rotating inner diving bezel which is directly opposite in the outer case.

Set within the rotating inner diving bezel is the black dial, with white luminescent hour markers, with luminescent material filling also applied to both gothic syringes shaped hour hand and minute hand. The black dial with luminescent hour and minute markers (matching those of the rotating inner diving bezel) appeal to Nethun’s authentic diver watch character, but the gothic syringe hour hand and minute hand design, and the striking screw fixed construction of the inner and outer case elements place both Strom Agonium Nethuns II diving watch, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diving watch in an altogether different “League”, and very “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” with its 200m of water resistance.

It is the combination of the hand operated screw locked submarine bulkhead hatch wheel at 9 o’clock to rotate the inner diving scale bezel, the traditional screwed crown at 3 o’clock, and the quite amazing outer case festooned with rivets and bolts which give the effected of a plated steel submarine hull that really give the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch the most authentic claim to Jules Verne’s legacy and a retro futurist aspiration.

The tourbillon that features on the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diving watch adds a further haute horlogerie complication to the overall effect achieved by Swiss watchmaker-designer-philosopher Daniel Strom, the retrofuturism embodied in the tourbillon not only reminiscent of a Jules Verne’s submarine here but perhaps also an H.G. Wells Time Machine. The tourbillon actually used on the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch is a one-minute flying tourbillon, placed at 6 o’clock on the black dial, the tourbillon completing one revolution every sixty seconds or one minute, hence the appellation as a one-minute flying tourbillon. There can be no doubt, that the addition of the haute horlogerie complication to the, Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch by Switzerland based Daniel Strom of Strom Watches adds another aesthetic level of the Nethuns II concept when compared to the non-tourbillon equipped Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch, and one that is perfectly in line with his watchmaker as both designer and philosopher credentials, giving the Nethuns II not only further retro futurist style but further authentic diver appeal.

In the life of a watch such as the Strom Agonium Nethuns II, or the diving tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon Diving watch, it is, of course, rare that its owner will take to the water in July in some far-flung dive spot. It is perfectly possible that the owner of either dive watch will in fact never make such an offering to Nethuns, or Neptune, God of the Seas. Perhaps it is better to see both of these watches from the acclaimed watchmaker/designer that produces them in Switzerland, each Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch a unique piece in its own right thanks to the level of hand-finishing applied, as an offering to Nethuns by Daniel Strom himself. Fortunately this offering to Nethuns, God of the Seas, is one that many aficionados of the diver or diving watch will appreciate, and far from venturing into the sea on a hot July day somewhere to rest from a busy life, both the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch will be worn every day of the owner’s life. Perhaps this is the reason why Daniel Strom has chosen to offer versions of both the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watches in a range of case materials. A choice of 925 solid silver, bronze (CuSn8), palladium or platinum outer case options (with the inner case in steel), matched with the black dial/silver hand combination, give either watch an exceptionally broad appeal, especially when matched with either the black or brown leather or rubber strap (itself with the option of a solid silver, gold, palladium or platinum pin buckle). The Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watch, and its tourbillon version, the Strom Agonium Nethuns II Tourbillon diver watches are truly a diver’s watch for every day of the owner’s life, whether in the water or not.
