Laurent's opinion
The UR-120 Blue Planet is arguably one of the most spectacular URWERK watches of recent years. It is a watch that fully embraces its science-fiction aesthetic while remaining a true showcase of contemporary haute horlogerie.

URWERK UR-120 Blue Planet: The Cosmos’ Final Farewell

With the UR-120 Blue Planet, URWERK presents the ultimate interpretation of a watch that has become a cult classic among enthusiasts of contemporary independent watchmaking. Produced in a limited edition of just 20 pieces, this creation marks the end of an iconic chapter in the history of the Geneva-based brand.

Its name immediately evokes space exploration. Its deep, almost liquid blue recalls the Earth as seen from space, while its gold accents lend a cinematic and futuristic dimension to this extraordinary mechanical architecture.

The UR-120 Blue Planet embodies the radical identity of the UR-120 collection with a blue PVD-coated steel case featuring a complex two-part construction. The middle case and upper case fit together with remarkable precision, creating a fluid silhouette without any visual breaks. The domed sapphire crystal further accentuates this sensation of a futuristic capsule suspended in time.
On the wrist, the watch retains URWERK’s signature ergonomics thanks to its articulated lugs and integrated adjustment system. Every detail of the case contributes equally to both aesthetics and wearing comfort.

At the heart of this UR-120 Blue Planet beats the UR-20.01 automatic caliber, one of the most spectacular movements developed by the manufacture. The display relies on three rotating hour satellites that move along a minute track. But here, the mechanism goes even further: when the satellite reaches the left side of the case, its two blocks open to form a mechanical “V” inspired by the famous Vulcan salute from science fiction.

This complication requires an extremely sophisticated mechanical choreography: rotation of the carousel, counter-rotation of the satellites, synchronized opening of the hour modules, and precise energy management via Maltese crosses and a specific lyre-shaped spring.
The UR-120 Blue Planet does more than simply tell the time. It showcases the mechanics in a true kinetic spectacle.

The movement’s functional elements are enhanced by a yellow gold PVD coating that contrasts with the watch’s intense blue. Far from being merely decorative, this finish highlights the caliber’s active components and accentuates the visual depth of the whole.

With this final edition, URWERK brings the UR-120 saga to a close in a particularly expressive and emotional version. A rare collector’s watch, conceived as a final salute to enthusiasts of futuristic horology and lovers of avant-garde mechanical design.
