After 20 years of watchmaking provocations, MB&F takes us by surprise with the SP One. A 38 mm watch? Elegant? Yes, but still with that touch of madness that makes all the difference. It's MB&F at its best: taking us where no one expects them to go, without ever denying their DNA. A rare balance between mechanical radicalism and discreet refinement. And as always, they dare to go where others are content to play it safe.
MB&F SP One: three-dimensional elegance in a 38 mm case
After two decades of bold watchmaking creativity and disruptive innovations, MB&F surprises once again where no one expected it: a 38 mm mechanical watch that is understated, elegant, yet unmistakably MB&F in spirit and execution.
The MB&F SP One – Special Project One, originally nicknamed “Three Circles,” embodies true mechanical performance. Suspended in a miniature amphitheater, the barrel, balance wheel, and dial appear to float weightlessly beneath invisible sapphire domes. A play of balance and transparency brings to life a unique spectacle on the wrist, where mechanical poetry meets technical challenge.
A classic watch that is anything but
The SP One inaugurates an unclassifiable collection called Special Projects, situated between the futuristic Horological Machines and the more classic Legacy Machines. But make no mistake: beneath its demure exterior, the SP One is anything but a conventional watch.
It all began with a post-pandemic rethink, when MB&F, true to its non-conformist DNA, decided to dip into its famous basket of crazy ideas. This introspective approach gave rise to the SP One, a synthesis of an essential trinity: the barrel, the balance wheel, and the dial—three fundamental elements of mechanical watchmaking, here sublimated and suspended as never before.
A suspended movement, between technical challenge and radical elegance
At the heart of the SP One is a movement designed around these three key elements, all presented with the same circumference to accentuate the visual harmony. This strong aesthetic choice required an ultra-sophisticated architecture, with virtually invisible bridges and components cleverly concealed beneath the three floating circles.
The inclined dial reveals MB&F‘s mastery of beveled gears, offering a subtle, three-dimensional reading that is rare in contemporary watchmaking. Every detail and finish is an expression of exceptional watchmaking craftsmanship, with hand-polished angles, satin-finished, polished or micro-blasted surfaces, and prominent chatons that are the signature touch of MB&F.
A 38 mm space pebble with an irresistible feel
On the wrist, the SP One offers a unique sensation. Its 38 mm case, designed like a fluid, streamlined pebble, evokes the smoothness of a stone polished by time. Completely devoid of a bezel, it merges with its sapphire crystals, reinforcing the impression of levitation. The hand-polished lugs are detached from the upper case, creating a subtle interplay of spaces and accentuating the organic design of the whole.
It is certainly slim – the slimmest from MB&F – but without ever seeking to break records for extreme thinness. Here, it is all about proportions, accuracy, and the perfect balance between elegance, mechanical innovation, and artistic expression.
A classic MB&F… but still off the beaten track
With the SP One, MB&F proves that it can surprise where you least expect it. An elegant and discreet 38 mm watch, it nevertheless retains all the brand’s iconic features: three-dimensional architecture, a suspended movement, exceptional hand-finished details and a radical approach to watch design.
A true ode to balance and risk-taking, the SP One proves that at MB&F, even the most “classic” watch is anything but classic.
