The great success of this TYPE 10 lies in the concept of a watch that no longer resembles an assembly of components, but rather an object that has found its definitive form through its evolution. Weighing just 82 grams on the wrist, this feat is as much an ergonomic achievement as it is a technical one. A particularly accomplished Ressence timepiece that demonstrates once again that innovation does not necessarily mean adding complications.
Ressence TYPE 10 DN — The Natural Passage of Time
With the TYPE 10 DN Dark Night, Ressence takes another step forward in its vision of contemporary watchmaking. Conceived by Benoît Mintiens, this creation explores an idea as simple as it is radical: What would a mechanical watch look like if its form evolved according to the laws of nature rather than those of traditional engineering?
Four years of development have given rise to a watch with organic lines, in which each element seems to blend seamlessly into the next. The case, sapphire crystal, dial, and integrated bracelet form a fluid, almost monolithic whole, finished in a deep blue hue called Dark Night.
But behind this apparent simplicity lies a true mechanical feat: the first Ressence watch with an oil-filled display powered by an in-house movement.
A needle-free architecture, unobstructed readability
True to Ressence’s philosophy, the TYPE 10 abandons traditional hands in favor of the patented ROCS 10 (Ressence Orbital Convex System). Its three-dimensional rotating discs display the hours, minutes, and a second time zone on a continuous graphic surface.
The convex dial, submerged in 2.95 ml of oil, appears to come into contact with the sapphire crystal. This unique feature eliminates typical refraction effects and offers exceptional readability from any viewing angle.
The peripheral minute track, consisting of 24 titanium segments with alternating finishes, subtly plays with light. The satin-finished surfaces change orientation from one segment to the next, creating a visual movement around the dial.
Two Worlds United by Magnetism
At the heart of the TYPE 10 DN beats the new RW-04 automatic caliber, designed by Ressence and equipped with two barrels providing a 60-hour power reserve.
The architecture is based on two hermetically sealed chambers: one contains the mechanical movement operating in air, while the other houses the display module submerged in oil.
Power is transmitted via magnetic coupling, with no physical contact between the two environments. A titanium membrane just 0.1 mm thick separates the magnets, while a compensation mechanism absorbs temperature-related variations in the oil’s volume.
The assembly comprises a total of 538 components, including 196 for the submerged ROCS 10 module.
Every Indication Has a Purpose
In addition to hours and minutes, the TYPE 10 DN features a second time zone, a rotating indicator that completes one revolution in 120 seconds, and a color-coded oil temperature display.
The 120-second indicator also plays a mechanical role by helping to stabilize the magnetic transmission against shocks. As for the temperature indicator, it allows the wearer to monitor the operating conditions of the oil-filled system.
Nothing is superfluous. Each function contributes to the balance between mechanics, ergonomics, and readability.
82 grams of sophistication
Crafted from polished Grade 5 titanium with a hard DLC coating, the 41.5 mm case flows naturally into an integrated midnight blue rubber strap. The domed sapphire crystals on the front and back accentuate the fluidity of the design, while the transparent case back reveals the RW-04 caliber.
Despite its particularly elaborate construction, the TYPE 10 DN weighs only 82 grams. Water-resistant to 5 ATM, it was designed to accompany you through everyday life with a discreet presence on the wrist.
Limited to just 100 pieces, the Ressence TYPE 10 DN Dark Night embodies a style of watchmaking in which mechanical complexity takes a back seat to the simplicity of the design.
