Ressence TYPE 9 Jules Wittock Emerald Green: Time at the Heart of the Labyrinth

With the TYPE 9 JWE Jules Wittock Emerald Green, Ressence transforms its lightest watch into a true work of art in motion. For this new Art Watch, the Antwerp-based manufacturer has teamed up with Jules Wittock, a Belgian artist known for his freehand-drawn labyrinths.

Limited to 30 pieces, this edition combines Ressence’s signature orbital display system with a Grade 5 titanium dial coated in emerald green PVD. The result is a spectacular design that can take on mauve hues depending on the angle and light.

But behind the design lies a hidden game: the maze has an entrance, an exit, and a path that spells out a word that only the watch’s owners will be able to discover.

Since childhood, Jules Wittock has been drawing mazes according to a precise rule: a single entrance, a single exit, and, between the two, a path that conceals a word.
For the Ressence TYPE 9 Jules Wittock Emerald Green, his work takes on a radically different scale. The pattern is engraved directly into Grade 5 titanium, with lines barely 0.2 mm wide, and then filled in by hand.
The emerald green background lends the design a unique depth. Its hue shifts with the light, eventually revealing mauve reflections, while the white outline of the labyrinth retains all its precision.
The design is therefore not simply a print applied to the dial: it becomes an integral part of the material itself.

A message that reveals itself at noon and midnight
The uniqueness of this work is fully revealed when the various moving elements of the dial align.
At noon and midnight, the discs return to a position that allows the labyrinth to be reconstructed, inviting the wearer to attempt to solve its path. A word is hidden within its design, but Ressence and Jules Wittock have chosen not to reveal its nature.
This idea echoes a childhood ritual of the artist’s, who associated certain specific times—such as 11:11 a.m. or 10:22 p.m.—with making a wish.
The watch thus offers two levels of interpretation: that of the time and that of a work of art to be observed and explored.

ROCS brings Jules Wittock’s work to life
This collaboration comes fully to life thanks to the Ressence Orbital Convex System, or ROCS, a patented technology that has become Ressence’s signature.
Here, no traditional hands rotate above a fixed dial. The surfaces indicating the hours and minutes are in constant motion relative to one another.
The ROCS 9 is driven by the minute axis of a modified automatic movement. The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 36-hour power reserve.
Jules Wittock’s labyrinth is thus constantly reshaped by the passage of time. The work is never completely static and takes on a different appearance throughout the day.

The TYPE 9 as a Miniature Canvas
With its 39-mm Grade 5 titanium case, a thickness of just 11 mm, and a weight of 42 grams including the strap, the TYPE 9 serves as a particularly minimalist canvas for this artistic collaboration.
Ressence continues its Art Watches series by giving an artist the opportunity to work not merely on the dial, but with the very principle of the watch’s time display.
