At Chronopassion, we had the privilege of being among the very first to represent Daniel Roth in 1991, alongside Daniel himself. Seeing the company reborn today with creations as sublime as this Platinum Tourbillon is a real joy. This piece confirms that the spirit, high standards, and elegance that made Daniel Roth great are more alive than ever.
Daniel Roth Tourbillon Platinum – The ultimate expression of traditional haute horlogerie
Daniel Roth Tourbillon Platinum – The ultimate expression of traditional haute horlogerie
The Daniel Roth Tourbillon Platinum embodies the rebirth of a legendary watchmaker, synonymous with discreet excellence and traditional watchmaking artistry. Directly inspired by the iconic 2187/C187 model from 1988, this exceptional creation pays tribute to Monsieur Daniel Roth’s favorite complication: the tourbillon, the ultimate symbol of mechanical virtuosity and timeless refinement.
With this platinum edition, Daniel Roth is opening a new chapter in its history, faithful to its motto: La Montre – Objet d’Art.
A renaissance that began in 2023: a return to Daniel Roth’s fundamentals
The relaunch of the brand in 2023 was based on two founding pillars:
- the Tourbillon,
- and the Extra Flat,
initially presented in a subscription series of 20 pieces in yellow gold decorated with a Clous de Paris pattern. These were followed by versions in rose gold, adorned with a pinstripe guilloché pattern. These models share a common DNA: the characteristic double ellipse case and shaped calibers designed exclusively for Daniel Roth.
The DR001 (Tourbillon) and DR002 (Extra Flat) movements were developed by two exceptional master watchmakers: Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini, founders of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. Their expertise has made it possible to modernize the Roth spirit while respecting its historical codes.
The Tourbillon Platinum: sublimating an icon
The return of platinum to the Daniel Roth collection
The most noble of materials, platinum has always been reserved for the most prestigious creations in watchmaking. Although it was very much present during Daniel Roth’s first golden age, it was not yet featured in the collection relaunched in 2023. The Tourbillon Platinum marks this long-awaited return, hailed by collectors for its unparalleled weight, rarity, and unique visual depth.
Working with platinum is a difficult art:
- it requires specific tools,
- slower machining,
- and perfect mastery of finishes.
As a result, a platinum case takes up to three times longer to make than an 18K gold case.
The double ellipse: a legendary design, sublimated
Created by Daniel Roth in 1988, the double ellipse combines square and circular lines to magnify the amplitude of the tourbillon. This now iconic architecture has been faithfully recreated and subtly refined:
- hand-welded lugs, now more ergonomic,
- a slightly slimmer profile,
- respect for historical detail: the seconds hand still passes through a discreet channel in the side of the case, as in 1988.
A solid gold dial, hand-guilloché
The dial of the Tourbillon Platinum is a work of art in itself:
- solid white gold,
- elegant anthracite finish,
- linear guilloché engraved by hand on a traditional machine.
Each element—the 925 silver chapter ring, the three-sector seconds scale, and the famous “whiskers” bearing the Daniel Roth name—is guilloché separately, with finely fluted edges using the filet sauté technique. The complexity of the whiskers even required the development of a specific tool for the restored guilloché machines at La Fabrique du Temps.
A dial requires up to three days of work by a single master guillocheur. The slightest imperfection means that everything has to be redone.
Caliber DR001: the beating heart of Daniel Roth
The caliber DR001, unveiled in 2023, represents the quintessence of the brand’s historic expertise. Developed specifically for the double ellipse case, it perpetuates the legacy of Daniel Roth, a pioneer of modern tourbillons since the Breguet years.
Fine watchmaking finishes: authenticity and excellence
Each component—including those invisible once the watch is assembled—is entirely finished by hand:
- rounded bevels,
- mirror-polished steel,
- pearling,
- fine Côtes de Genève evoking the guilloché pattern on the dial,
- polished gold chatons, a symbol of traditional excellence.
Unlike the solid case back version, the Tourbillon Platinum allows the movement to be admired through a sapphire case back, enhancing the watchmaking experience.
Modernized performance
The DR001 caliber offers:
- 80 hours of power reserve,
- optimized thickness,
- and an architecture perfectly suited to the double ellipse shape.
